What is the Difference Between Enclosed Car Trailers and Open Car Trailers?

Open and Enclosed car trailers both accomplish the same purpose, which is  to transport a car without driving it on a trailers for point A to point B.

The main difference in the two trailers is that the enclosed car trailer offers protection from road hazards such as rocks, debris and flying objects that come of trucks with open trailers.

Most open car trailers have no protection from road hazards such as rocks or debris on the road.  In this case if you are transporting a valuable car an open trailer will not provide protection.  A simple rock or piece of debris could cause tens of thousands of dollars if it strikes an expensive car.

The main advantage of an enclosed car trailer is the walls and ceiling that protect your car from road damage.  The enclosed trailer has additional advantages in the options that are available.

Flooring

Typically open car trailers have wood decks.  The disadvantage of a wood deck is that in the open over time the wood deck deteriorates.  This forces the owner of the open car trailer to replace the wood deck.  Some aluminum open car trailers have aluminum plank floor and is much more durable then bare wood.

Lighting

In stark contrast, the enclosed trailer allows you to put lighting almost everywhere.  There are LED porch lights, flood lights and strips of lights.  The strips are usually interior can come in different colors such as white and blue. Top and bottom marker lights are on the enclosed trailer for better visibility.

Awnings

Open trailer are unable to support traditional awnings because there is no top rail or fixed point to mount the awning.  This will leave you out in the sun with no shade.

An enclosed car trailer offers many awnings sizes.  Typically the awning goes above the entry door(s) and blocks the sun from entering the trailer or the immediate area.  When an awning is added to the trailer, the owner may use it as shade.  The awning can also shield a person from precipitation falling from the sky.

Cabinets

Cabinets offer storage for tools, straps and many more items that are used to transport and tie down a car.

In an open trailer, the cabinets are limited and usually relegated to a separate structure with a small amount of storage. Normally a metal frame is erected to hold the cabinets.  These leaves the cabinets exposed to the elements and they may rust,

The enclosed trailer allows the owner to install upper and lower cabinets in the whole length of the trailer giving them a large storage area.  The cabinets are also protected from the elements because they are inside the enclosed trailer.  Another advantage is if the cabinet opens during transport your items will not end up on the road.

Living Quarters

Living Quarters allows for great flexibility when traveling.  When you arrive at your destination your have the option of staying in the living quarters or just using it as a longue.  Open trailers do not allow for living quarters but the enclosed trailers offer many different configurations and in most cases you can design a custom living quarters.

Weather

An open trailer provides no shelter in case of in climate weather such as rain, hail or snow.  The enclosed trailer offers full protection from the elements and thus great comfort.  You can’t get out of the rain by entering your open trailer.
